LAST WEEK: Ex-AFL trio goes berserk, Tigers’ huge haul

Three ex-AFL players produced jaw-dropping performances in the Geelong Football Netball League.

Grovedale ruckman Ryan Abbott and classy Colac pair Darcy Lang and Jonathan Simpkin all eclipsed 190 Premier Data ranking points and sit in the top four performers from the first weekend of the split round.

Former St Kilda and Geelong player Abbott led all comers with a monster outing against Newtown & Chillwell, where he took full advantage after Eagles’ first choice ruckman Cameron Wilkinson went down in the second quarter.

Abbott amassed 62 hit-outs, 15 of those to advantage, 16 disposals, 16 contested possessions, nine inside 50s, nine clearances and 203 ranking points.

In Colac’s demolition of St Albans, ex-Cat and Blue Lang booted five goals and finished with 30 disposals, 14 contested possessions, 13 marks and 195 points, while Hawthorn premiership player Jon Simpkin wound back the clock with a formidable 42 disposals, 16 marks, 12 inside 50s, two goals and 190 points.

But it was GFNL leading goalkicker Adam Garner’s stunning nine-goal haul that was arguably the best individual display of the lot — and it could have been a huge bag if he had’ve kicked straight, finishing with five behinds.

Garner was an unstoppable force with 23 disposals, 15 contested possessions, a staggering 14 marks inside 50, seven contested marks and 192 points.

Geelong VFL player Tobyn Murray (30 disposals, 11 marks, eight inside 50s, seven clearances, a goal and 150 points) and Dustin Walters (24 disposals, 12 contested possessions, 11 marks, three goals and 139 points) also had big outings against the Supersaints.

There were more impressive performances in the Eagles’ narrow win over Grovedale, with midfield Ned Harris leading the charge in his 100th game 27 disposals, 14 contested possessions, eight marks, seven tackles, two goals and 159 points.

St Joseph’s coach Ron Watt praised the game of Jack Mullen and he was the top ranked player on the ground in their win over Geelong West with a well-rounded 34 disposals, 14 contested possessions, nine marks, eight inside 50s, four goals and 142 points.

Tanner Lovell (Tanner Lovell 26 disposals, 12 contested possessions, a goal and 114 points) was Geelong West’s top ranked performer while Joeys key forward Paddy De Grandi kicked four goals and clunked six contested marks.
