A woman allegedly told police she was “running late for work” after she was clocked hooning at 150km/h on a major road near Geelong.

Highway patrol officers have charged a 28-year-old Winter Valley woman with excess speed and dangerous traffic offences following the incident in Bannockburn.

The woman’s Ford Focus was allegedly pinged speeding 50km/h over the 100km/h limit on the Midland Highway.

Officers intercepted the car at about 9.45am on Friday as part of Operation Furlong.

“The Winter Valley woman allegedly stated she was running late for work,” a police spokeswoman said.

She will be charged on summons and her car was impounded, with towing costs of $1425.

It comes after police issued a warning to motorists in Victoria over drink and drug driving over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.

Operation Furlong will run until 11:59pm on Tuesday, with police planning to carry roughly 120,000 breath tests across the state.

The Victorian road toll sits at 244 this calendar year, a 16 per cent increase from 2022.
