Plans for a new piggery with capacity for more than 4000 animals is currently before council.

The farm, which would be operated by Western Plains Pork, would sit on a 605.9 hectare site in Barunah Park, west of Geelong, with plans submitted to the Golden Plains Shire last week.

Situated on either side of Bells Rd, the location of the site is 7km southeast of Rokewood and about 13km northeast of Cressy.

According to the plans, 4418 pigs would be contained on the farm at any given time, most of that number consisting of piglets.

Western Plains Pork has been producing pigs for more than 25 years in the Western Districts of Victoria.

The company operates other rotational piggeries in the area, including one at Mount Mercer.

Rotational piggeries keep pigs in outdoor paddocks that are used in rotation with a pasture cropping phase.

During the stocked phase, the pigs are provided with prepared feed but they can also forage.

After two years, the pigs are moved on to a new area of the farm.

The farm aims to grow wheat, barely, canola and straw during cropping phases.

Each paddock on the farm will have a group hut with bedding for the pigs to sleep in, as well as solar powered feeders, a wallow for cooling and a drinking trough.

It is estimated 23,400 litres of water will be required a day for the troughs.

According to the plans all facilities would be designed to be portable and moved at least once every six months to help distribute manure nutrients more evenly over the paddocks.

The entire property and surrounds sit within a farming zone, with pig farms allowed with planning approval within the zone.

The plans will be up on the Golden Plains shire website for consultation until April 21.
