A Portarlington family’s rescue cat miraculously survived after being trapped in their neighbour’s garage for five weeks with no food or water.
Lisa Prendergast noticed her beloved cat Wasabi had gone missing on February 25.
Five weeks to the day later, on Easter Sunday, he was found trapped in a backyard garage, less than 100 metres away from their home.
Ms Prendergast said the family had “written him off for dead” and it was an Easter miracle he was found.
“I had made flyers and put it on social media pages,” she said.
“We thought he had been attacked.”
Ms Prendergast heard her husband yelling for her to come outside on Sunday.
“Our neighbour said she thought she had heard something in her garage for the past few weeks but every time she went to have a look, she couldn’t see anything,” she said.
“When she opened the door on Sunday, she saw him jump behind some boxes.”
Mr Prendergast couldn’t believe it when she called Wasabi’s name and his head popped up.
“I picked him up and I burst into tears,” she said.
“I don’t know how he survived because he had no food or water and we had some really hot weather recently.
“It’s unbelievable.”
It is believed Wasabi snuck inside the garage when the door was opened and became trapped inside.
“(My neighbour) said she hardly ever goes in (her shed),” Ms Prendergast said.
“I can’t believe he’s alive.
“There is nothing of him, he is just skin and bones.”
Ms Prendergast said Wasabi was recovering well and was eating and drinking as usual.
She first noticed he was missing more than a month ago after he didn’t come for his dinner.
“He normally sleeps in the patio area on a chair and I thought it was weird that he wasn’t there,” Ms Prendergast said.
“He never really wanders off”
Ms Prendergast, who has owned Wasabi for four years, said he was very special to her family.
