A volunteer is in hospital after a wild waterfront crash during a popular motoring festival.
Video which emerged on social media shows a BMW car participating in the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival lose control before slamming into a concrete barrier about 4pm Saturday.
A marshall standing close to the barrier was thrown to the ground, suffering a serious foot injury in the process.
Event director Nicholas Heath confirmed the volunteer suffered a “pretty significant foot injury” after the bottom of the barrier struck his limb.
“First aid were there immediately, then we brought in an ambulance,” Mr Heath said.
“I’ve spoken to the family and they’re keeping me abreast, he’s apparently quite chipper, but no one comes to these sorts of events expecting that to happen.
“We’re all a big family, so we’re just keeping in touch with the family.
“This is just a really unfortunate accident, and as a consequence he has sustained a significant foot injury, and we hate for this sort of thing to happen.
“I felt heartsick when I heard.”
Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were on scene to treat the man, who is in his 60s, before taking him to Geelong hospital in a stable condition.
Mr Heath said a number of factors contributed to the injury, including the marshall’s proximity to the track barrier.
“Our preference is that marshalls stay clear of the track, they shouldn’t be that close,” Mr Heath said.
“That was one of the things that occurred that we would prefer, and we have looked at that and asked all marshalls stay at least a metre clear of the track.”
Following a dynamic review of the incident, the Mr Heath said the event was deemed safe to go ahead on Sunday, with a full review into the incident to come.
“This is a really unfortunate accident, and our thoughts are with the person who was injured,” Mr Heath said.
“This is our, maybe unlucky, 13th year, and we largely run injury free.
“This is a significant foot injury, we are really pleased it wasn’t more significant than that.
“We will continue to strive to run a safe and enjoyable event for the Geelong community.”
It is understood the driver of the BMW did not require emergency treatment.
