Torquay Bowls Club releases expansion plans for The Esplanade site

Despite not having the money or approval to move ahead with the plans, the club will consult with the community in the coming weeks.

A popular Surf Coast sport and recreation venue has released plans for a $4m upgrade of its century-old site, despite lacking the necessary funding or approval to move forward.

Torquay Bowls Club is planning a major expansion of its facilities, including a third bowling green, extended deck, bigger clubhouse, and new car park.

However, the project is far from set in stone — it still requires $4m in government funding and approvals from the Surf Coast Shire and Department of Energy Environment and Climate Action (DEECA).

Earlier this month, Great Ocean Road Coast And Parks Authority (GORCAPA) shot down a suggestion to use neighbouring Taylor Park for vehicle access into the club.

The move was opposed by a number of local community groups including the Greater Torquay Alliance, 3228 Residents Association, and Friends of Taylor Park.

The plans have since been amended to ensure the expansion is contained within the current lease boundaries, with the club stating they are committed to minimising environmental impact from the project.

Club chair Peter Anderson said the upgrade would be a “wonderful asset” for the community and enjoyed by “generations to come.”

“This project, when approved, will enable us to facilitate a major investment in local sport and social infrastructure in Torquay,” he said.

“For the club, it will provide significant upgrades, including an additional green, expanded social areas, and improved access to better serve the growing community.”

Torquay Bowls Club expects the project will inject up to $28m into the local economy by creating jobs through construction as well as a boost in tourism.

Club manager Andrew Dodson said they wanted the site to become a social hub.

“This expansion is about more than just improving our facilities — it’s about strengthening the community bonds that make this club so special,” he said.

“We want to create a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, enjoy the sport, and connect with each other.”

“We look forward to working closely with the community to bring this vision to life.”

An information night will be held at the clubhouse on May 22 from 4-6pm.
