The Torquay community is banding together for a dad who has spent most of the year in hospital.
Adrian Maycock has struggled for about 20 years with rheumatoid arthritis, which means he has a compromised immune system.
The 47-year-old collapsed in the days after last Christmas and ended up in hospital with sepsis.
But his auto-immune condition meant treating this had been complicated, family friend Saskia Angel said.
Mr Maycock has been hospitalised 10 times since last Christmas, with stints in intensive care and surgery.
This year, he has spent more time in hospital than home.
While he currently is home, a nurse visits twice a day.
“It’s just a long road ahead because it’s just hard to treat,” Ms Angel said.
Ms Angel said Mr Maycock, his wife Mel and their two teenage kids gave to the community “all the time”.
Mr Maycock coached basketball, and Ms Maycock netball.
“Neither of them ever ask for anything and they give so much,” Ms Angel said.
A GoFundMe page titled ‘The Maycock family needs your help’ has been established to support housing and medical expenses.
It has raised more than $9500, and has a target of $45,000.
“The community has just been amazing,” Ms Angel said.
A fundraising event will be held on Saturday, December 16 to support the family.
The Christmas gift and plant sale will be held at 1/11 Cylinders Dr, Torquay from 8am to 1pm.
More information is available at the Facebook ‘Xmas Gift & Plant Sale Fundraiser’ event page.
