A mother and son duo have been arrested while attempting to flee a busy shopping centre after allegedly going on a stealing spree.

According to Victoria Police, the pair drove to Geelong from Ballarat to allegedly steal from Westifield.

Officers responded when they tried to flee the centre after allegedly stealing a range of items from various stores.

Senior Constables Jacoba Burns and Vicki McLean arrested the duo at the intersection of Malop St and Moorabool St about 1pm on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old son and his 52-year-old mother were both charged with theft and bailed.

Both aren’t welcome back in the centre, with Westfield issuing 12-month bans to the duo.

Senior sergeant Aaron Riches said: “As a police service we continue to prioritise our city and the safety of those attending our shopping centres – this includes suburban shopping strips.”

In July of this year more than 70 people were arrested when police swooped on Westfield as part of a safety blitz, including two women who allegedly stole more than $5000 worth of goods from a shop.
