A Lara man is fighting for his life and police are investigating after a chase ended with a car crashing into a tree in Corio overnight.
The 35-year-old is believed to have been a passenger in a silver Toyota Camry sedan driving erratically in Norlane just before midnight on Tuesday.
He was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday with life-threatening injuries.
A hospital spokeswoman said he remains in a serious condition.
Senior Constable Natasha Leigh said officers said the vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the Princes Hwy when officers tried to intercept it.
“The Toyota then drove into the median strip towards the northbound lanes and crashed into a tree,” Constable Leigh said.
“Police and other emergency services quickly responded to render assistance to the three occupants of the vehicle.
“All three occupants have been taken to hospital under police guard.”
Constable Leigh said a 35-year-old Lara man who was a passenger was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
She said the driver, a 24-year-old Norlane man, and another passenger, a 23-year-old Bell Park man, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A Barwon Health spokesman on Wednesday afternoon said the 35-year-old had been taken to a Melbourne hospital.
“The 23-year-old was treated and released to police custody and the 24-year-old is in a stable condition,” the spokesman said.
Constable Leigh said an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident was ongoing.
“Professional Standards Command has been notified and will have oversight of the investigation as per normal procedure.”
The Princes Hwy between Purnell Rd and Harpur Rd is closed in both directions due to the incident.
VicTraffic advises drivers to avoid the area and seek an alternative route.
