Horse rescued from Moolap pit

A horse has been rescued from a Moolap pit after becoming trapped.

Fire crews worked to rescue a horse trapped in a pit at Moolap.

A horse has been rescued after becoming trapped in a mechanical pit in Moolap in the early hours of Monday.

Firefighters spent four hours working to free the 350kg horse after calls to triple-0 were made about 3am.

Country Fire Authority Commander Gavin Fitzgerald said crews were called to the Chipperfield Drive property when the owner found the distressed horse stuck in the pit.

“Crews from Leopold CFA arrived first to discover an approximately 350kg horse had fallen through a timber plate mechanical pit full of water,” he said.

“So CFA and FRV attempted to remove the horse unsuccessfully.”

Mr Fitzgerald said a specialist heavy animal rescue team from Arthurs Creek was called in to assist.

“They sent a response team forward to check the animal, who was stressed but stable,” he said.

The horse was finally freed just after 7.30am and was believed to be in a stable condition.

A neighbour said he heard the horse crying about 3am.

He described the incident as distressing and said a camel had fallen into the same pit in 2022.

“It’s not the first time,” he said.

“The owner got it out on her own that time.

“I have horses myself and I’m just distressed for the animals.”
