A wall has been defaced with anti-Semitic markings on a busy Geelong road amid heightened fears right-wing extremists are honing in on regional cities.

The City of Greater Geelong have been made aware of large white Nazi swastikas being painted on the Geelong Ring Road.

The stretch is controlled by Vic Roads.

It follows a number of recent incidents involving far-right extremists in Geelong, who anti-fascist leaders claim are attempting to “soak up” vulnerable and disenfranchised people as part of a recruiting drive.

Members of neo-Nazi organisation National Socialist Network (NSN) posed in front of City Hall and the CFMEU building, and circulated anti-immigration messaging on mobile app Telegram and social media.

Multicultural Pakington St has also been targeted by hate speech.

The emergence of a Nazi swastika symbol painted on a North Geelong warehouse in April also drew the ire of Jewish leaders and the broader community.

It comes as police made an arrest in Melbourne on Friday after a man allegedly performed the Nazi salute on October 27, the first since new legislation was introduced last month.

The 24-year-old, from North Melbourne, has been charged and will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on December 8.
