Commonwealth Games officials to be based at Geelong headquarters

Officials with the Commonwealth Games will set up base on Geelong’s waterfront.

Officials for the Commonwealth Games will call Geelong home after they moved into their new waterfront headquarters.

Located on the corner of Brougham and Gheringhap streets, the headquarters will be a hub for sports administrators and dignitaries from both Australia and overseas.

Currently 50 staff, including Victoria 2026 chief executive officer Jeroen Weimar, are working in the office which will also be supported by hubs in Ballarat, Bendigo and Melbourne.

Mr Weimar said it was important for the regional games to be planned and delivered in a regional community, such as Geelong, and for officials to support local businesses during the pre-competition stage.

“Our Games cities are great places to live, work and invest and we’re proud to be just one of many businesses and agencies that have moved to regional Victoria in the last few years,” he said.

The competition is set to contribute more than $3 billion to the Victorian economy, support 600 jobs before the Games and 3,000 jobs post-competition.

Geelong is set to host nine sports and three parasports during the 2026 games including aquatics, weightlifting and gymnastics.

The athletes village was also confirmed to be built in Waurn Ponds earlier this year which will then be turned into social and affordable housing once the event has finished.

The closing ceremony is set to be held at Kardinia Park.
