Man cops charges for TikTok videos

A series of videos posted to TikTok to “one up” his mates tipped police off to a hoon driver terrorising Colac and Geelong streets.

Posted under hashtags like #BlackLinesMatter and #F---TheCops, Colac man Jesse Hundhammer, 22, was captured on several TikTok videos performing burnouts at all hours of the night.

Hundhammer appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to nine charges of using a mobile phone while driving and 37 charges of losing traction while driving.

After being tipped off by a viewer of his TikTok account, police found more than 30 videos of Hundhammer’s erratic and dangerous driving on public roads between January and August 2021.

In some videos, Hundhammer performed burnouts close to an unknown man, exposing him to risk of death or serious injury.

Often Hundhammer was filmed by a passenger in the car.

The driving took place on roads around Colac, Mount Moriac, Moolap and on the Princes Highway and Great Ocean Road.

After CCTV captured Hundhammer fishtailing in his red Holden utility on Point Henry Rd in Moolap, an area known for “anti-social activity”, he told police he was doing it for “mental health reasons”.

Following the analysis of his phone and the TikTok videos, Hundhammer made full admissions to being the one driving.

His lawyer, Sean Hardy, told the court Hundhammer was a “fan of motor vehicles” and he “likes showing them off”.

“That’s what brought him undone here,” Mr Hardy said.

Mr Hardy added Hundhammer and his friends were engaged in “one upmanship” on “who can take the best video and post it online”.

Magistrate Michelle Hodgson told Hundhammer “that kind of thrill seeking could very likely land you in jail”.

“It should be quite apparent to you that this was inherently dangerous, not just to yourself, not just to the people who were engaged in videoing you or who were foolish enough to be your passengers, but also to other road users.

“The road rules are in place for a reason, and that is to make it safe.

“In these circumstances, you quite deliberately flouted the road rules, you have bragged about them, (and) you have done it quite openly on social media. That is of real concern,” Ms Hodgson said.

Ms Hodgson rejected descriptions of Hundhammer’s driving being “larrikin behaviour” because it was “a really benign way of putting it”.

“It’s just dangerous, it’s self-indulgent, it’s just looking for excitement.

“I think it’s really selfish and really dangerous,” Ms Hodgson said.

Hundhammer was fined $5000 and his car will be destroyed.
