Police are investigating a suspicious caravan fire on a residential street in Leopold which raged out of control on Friday morning and spread to an adjacent house.

When crews arrived, they found a caravan burning out of control, with the blaze spreading to a building on the street.

A CFA spokesman said crews with breathing apparatus were required, and were able to extinguish the bulk of the fire, with it being deemed under control as of 11.22am.

No one was inside the caravan at the time.

Leading senior constable Jody Clayton said the fire was being treated as suspicious and a crime scene had been set up.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were on scene for health monitoring.
