Blackwood Development behind Torquay boutique hotel project
A mystery boutique hotel and 100-seat restaurant will transform Torquay’s former Surf City Motel site, with developers remaining tight-lipped about the coastal venue’s specifics.
A boutique hotel and 100-seat restaurant is expected to open on The Esplanade in Torquay early next year, but the team behind the project is staying tight-lipped about specifics.
The fledgling Blackwood Development group is transforming the former Surf City Motel site at 35 The Esplanade that was also home to Zeally’s Bar and Grill up until about five years ago.
Melbourne-based George Robinson and Jack Davis are the company’s directors and shareholders, according to Australian Securities and Investments Commission documents.
When contacted, Mr Robinson would only say the venture was expected to launch in early 2026.
Located next door to Fisho’s seafood restaurant, construction at the site has been ongoing for months.
A now closed online job advertisement for a head chef at a “flagship coastal venue” pointed to a start date of November.
“We’re launching something truly special – a new restaurant built for the Torquay community, inspired by the Surf Coast lifestyle, and driven by creativity and fresh local produce,” the ad stated.
“As head chef, you’ll have the rare opportunity to build a kitchen team, shape a menu from the ground up, and lead the creation of a venue that will become a destination.”
The ad described Blackwood as an 18-month-old “fast-emerging hospitality and accommodation group with a growing footprint across Australia’s East Coast”.
“Our latest project – a 90 to 100-seat restaurant paired with a 17-room boutique hotel – is set to become one of the Surf Coast’s most sought-after destinations,” it stated.
“Located at the gateway to the Great Ocean Road in Torquay, the venue brings together refined coastal dining and elevated accommodation in a way that appeals to both locals and visitors alike.
“With a focus on premium local produce, thoughtful design, and warm, considered service, Blackwood is quickly earning a reputation for crafting spaces that feel both exceptional and inviting.”
Prior to its closure, Surf City Motel promoted itself as a “basic 3 star accommodation in a 5 star location”.
“Our aim is good, friendly but simple hospitality whilst you are on your travels,” it said.
