Animal rescue: Mother cat and six kittens rescued, ready for adoption from GAWS

The Geelong Animal Welfare Society has detailed the rescue story of a mother cat and her six kittens who were found in a car set for wreckage.

Six kittens who had a precarious start to life, found in a car that was reportedly about to be crushed, are looking for their forever homes.

In March this year, a mother cat and her six kittens – just one week old at the time – were brought in to the Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) by council after being discovered in a car at a local panel beater.

It’s understood the feline family was in the boot of the car that was about to be wrecked when they were heard and then spotted by employees.

GAWS believe the mother cat found her way into the car on her own, and wasn’t dumped there, to give birth to her kittens.

GAWS feline animal care supervisor Marnie Sweet said Ashley, the mother cat, was underweight and the whole group faced “uncertain circumstances” when they were discovered.

She said they were cared for by GAWS over two months including receiving medical treatment, desexing, vaccinations, flea and worming, foster care and “all the essentials”.

“These cats have been given a second chance of a happy, healthy life, and are ready for their forever homes,” Ms Sweet said.

“Mum cat was immediately friendly and happy with humans when she arrived at GAWS.

“She was happy to be handled and showed no signs of being timid or shy.

“Normally a cat this friendly would have been owned prior to coming to GAWS, but without a microchip, it is challenging to track down an owner.”

Ms Sweet said she couldn’t stress enough the importance of microchipping and desexing cats.

Ashley has already been adopted, and her babies became available for adoption from Friday afternoon.
