A festival of colour and fanfare swept Toowoomba’s CBD on Saturday, united in a celebration of culture.
For thousands of years Hare Krishna’s Festival of Chariots has been celebrated internationally, taking place for its second consecutive year in Toowoomba.
The festival is a procession of peace and cohesion that unites people of all backgrounds for the sole purpose of pulling the royal chariot through the streets.
The event began with a street procession where around 600 people gathered to pull the Chariot from Neil St back around to the Civic Square.
Perched atop of the Chariot are Jagannath (another name for Krishna, the Supreme Lord), Balabhadra or Baladev (elder brother of Jagannath) and Subhadra (sister of Jagannath).
Community members were then encouraged to participate in a variety of activities from music, dance, mantra meditation, children’s activities, henna and face painting, along with free authentic vegetarian foods.
Hare Krishna member Dharmesh Patel said it was an excellent day which saw a number of community members attend.
“It was a good result, there were a lot of different communities who attended,” he said.
“I’d say there were around 600 people (pulling the Chariot) I was at the front, so it was a bit hard to tell exactly.”
Mr Patel said plans are already underway for the festival’s return in 2025.
