NT Police revealed fresh information after four people lost their lives when two vehicles collided near Yirrkala community, in Arnhem Land.
The deaths mark the first fatal road accident for the NT in 2025.
Police received reports at 6.45am Wednesday of a break-in at a Nhulunbuy property where a grey Toyota Corolla had been stolen.
About 7.15am the Corolla was seen driving dangerously through the community and was later involved in a head-on collision with a white Toyota Prado on Gunyipinya Rd.
Four people were confirmed dead at the scene, three from the stolen car.
Speaking to media on Wednesday afternoon, police revealed the driver of the Prado that died had been 36-years-old.
Detective Senior Sergeant of the Major Crash Investigations Unit Adrian Prichard said a second occupant of the Prado suffered minor injuries in the crash and received medical treatment in Nhulunbuy.
He said as at 2.30pm on Wednesday, the Major Crash Investigation Unit were still on the scene and investigating.
Police said members of the forensic services branch also attended the scene and were formally processing the identification of the deceased.
Formal identification of the victims is yet to occur.
Gunyipinya Rd is expected to remain closed until investigations are complete.
As at January 8 2024, the NT road toll stood at one.
In the wake of the incident, Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said her thoughts went out to family and friends of the deceased.
“The four lives lost today should never have happened and resulted from a stolen car which collided with another vehicle,” she said.
“These four deaths – the first on our roads in 2025 — will have a significant impact on the local and broader community.
“We also thank the emergency service first responders faced with attending to this tragic situation.”
Member for Arnhem Selena Uibo also shared her condolences.
“This is an unimaginable loss and a terrible start to 2025, following the alarmingly high road toll we witnessed in 2024,” she said.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family.”
Anyone who witnessed the grey Toyota Corolla driving dangerously in the area is urged to contact police on 131 444.
