Four people have died in Queensland in three separate crashes on Mother’s Day, marking a dark day on the state’s roads.

The first smash resulted in a double fatality at Springfield.

A 22-year-old man was heading west bound on a Centenary Highway when he moved into the opposite lanes and crashed head on with two other vehicles early on Sunday morning.

The man from Marsden in Brisbane’s south, who was driving a Mitsubishi, died at the scene. His 22-year-old passenger was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

A 30-year-old man, who was driving an eastbound Mazda, was killed.

Two passengers in the Mazada, a 32-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man, were also taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A 24-year-old woman from Ripley, who was driving the third vehicle involved in the Springfield crash, was transported to Ipswich General Hospital in a stable condition.

An off-duty paramedic, who was on their way to work at the time of the crash, was the first on scene.

Senior Operations Supervisor Kevin Morgan said a total of six people were involved.

“It was quite, quite confronting. Certainly given the amount of people that were trapped in the vehicles, and early in the morning – there weren't many bystanders at which, when you’re at the scene, it was probably quite ruthless,” he said.

“Sadly, sadly, when these events happen on special days, like Mother’s Day or holidays or something the impact is significantly higher.”

The Centenary Highway between Springfield and White Rock has since reopened.

A second crash took place at Sarina, south of Mackay.

Police were called to reports of a man on the road at Sarina Beach road near Grasstree at 5.50am on Sunday.

The 27-year-old man was walking in a westbound lane when he was hit by a vehicle travelling in the same direction.

The vehicle then fled the scene.

The Sarina man suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

A third crash has claimed the life of a 24-year-old man at a Racecourse in Mackay, located in north Queensland, on Sunday.

The Mackay man was riding his motorbike when he crashed into a Toyota Corolla at an intersection at Horse and Jockey road and Meadowlands road.

The man died at the scene.

A 20-year-old Eimeo man and an 18-year-old Te Kowai woman, who were in the Toyota, were rushed to Mackay Base Hospital in a stable condition.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding each of the crashes.
