Former Isaac region Mayor Anne Baker announced as ALP candidate for Burdekin

Former Isaac region Mayor Anne Baker has thrown her hat into the ring for the state seat of Burdekin, aiming to ‘fight LNP cuts’ and protect the tiny, outback town of Glenden all over again.

A former Isaac region mayor who served for almost 20 years in local government and helped stop a tiny outback town from being demolished has stepped forward as the Queensland Labor Party’s candidate to try and dislodge LNP Burdekin MP Dale Last.

Former Isaac mayor Anne Baker, who stepped down from local politics in December of last year, was today announced as the ALP’s endorsed candidate for the rural seat.

Deputy Premier Cameron Dick made the announcement today during a campaign stop in Moranbah.

“Anne Baker fought to save the town of Glenden, deliver a new Moranbah Hospital and the Isaac Resources Centre of Excellence,” Mr Dick said.

“The LNP will cut royalties that are paying for power rebates and projects in Burdekin, meaning cuts to frontline services.

“Only Anne Baker and Labor will save regional towns and ensure coal royalties continue to fund cheaper power and projects like the Moranbah Hospital.”

Ms Baker said she was ‘proud’ to be selected as Labor’s candidate for the seat.

“Like many parts of Queensland, Burdekin has its own unique challenges, and it’s important that the people who live here are represented by a strong leader with a record of delivery,” Ms baker said.

“That is why I am running for the seat of Burdekin at the State Election, I know I can do better for Burdekin.”

The grassroots politician made headlines in August of 2023 when a campaign from local groups and the Isaac Regional Council saved the tiny mining community of Glenden from being bulldozed.

“I have a proven record of putting people over politics and I have shown that whether it is government or industry, I will always put my communities first,” Ms Baker said.

“Seeing the growth of the area, harnessing it’s potential to make it an even better place to live, work and raise a family is my priority.

“As part of a Miles Government, Burdekin will get its fair share and the people who live there will see the benefit of the increased investment and important measures we will take to tackle cost-of-living, housing and community safety.

“I fought hard to save Glenden, but now Qcoal and the LNP have joined forces to reverse these laws, destroy Glenden and wind back royalties that pay for our hospitals.

“I’ve decided to re-enter politics to fight LNP cuts and to make sure our region stays strong.”
