Cairns Post racing writer Jordan Gerrans reviews the week’s horse racing around the north in FNQ Mail, including an update on the Innisfail Cup’s status for 2020.

PUNTERS’ HOOP

Experienced North Queensland-based rider Frank Edwards is the punters’ best friend, figures released this week reveals.

The Courier Mail this week published some interesting data around jockeys’ strike-rate and tendency to ride roughies home and the veteran Edwards was one of the best in the state. Edwards is returning punters a 49.5 per cent profit from his 62 rides at $10 or shorter this season.

While you cannot have a bet, Edwards has four good chances up at Tolga on Saturday.

TESTING TIMES

Some NQ trainers have suggested stewards are using a new machine, leading to more positive tests for dexamethasone.

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett is having none of that.

“The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission Racing science Centre has not changed its testing methods for the prohibited substance, dexamethasone,” Barnett said.

“The RSC has been using an instrument put into service in April 2018 and applies the international screening limit of 0.2ng/ml in urine adopted by Australian racing laboratories in May 2015 and ratified in Queensland.

“The RSC is continually upgrading the NATA accredited equipment, however there has been no impact on the methods of testing or detection of dexamethasone.”

OLD COLOURS

The local stable of trainer Peter Rowe has switched back to their old racing colours, made famous by a previous Cairns Cup winner.

“We will be going back to the original set worn here by Cairns Cup winner Chateau Dettori,” Rowe said.

“Keep your eye out for the red and yellow braces … they’re back.”

DOUBTS OVER RACING CARNIVALS

Innisfail’s biggest parties of the year could be over before they even begin, with both the Banana Industry Race Day and Innisfail Annuals racing carnivals in serious doubt.

Event organisers are yet to make an official decision on the fate of the two social events as the Innisfail Turf Club plays a nervous waiting game with the State Government on crowd restrictions.

A five-race non-TAB meeting will be held on Saturday, August 15 regardless of whether or not patrons are permitted entry into Pease Park.

Innisfail Turf Club’s Kellie Harrison said there was no timeline on a firm decision being made at this point in time.

RACING CASH SPLASH

FNQ racing clubs have been included in the $2.6 million in infrastructure funding for 32 clubs across Queensland, creating or supporting almost 100 jobs.

Atherton Turf Club will have new track irrigation and a course mower, Einasleigh Race Club will receive fencing and signage for float parking and traffic management control, Innisfail Turf Club will convert night boxes to tie-up stalls, and the Laura Amateur Turf Club will be supplied with shipping containers to be used in future jockeys’ room upgrades.
