With just 60 days to go until American rock band The Killers kick of their Aussie tour in Townsville, super fans gathered at Queensland Country Bank Stadium as excitement builds in the city.
Announced last month as the next big, international act to perform in Townsville, The Killers are one of the biggest bands of the last two decade known for their iconic songs including Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me.
Bringing their Australian tour to Townsville for the first time on November 30, the city is also the first show before they travel to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Superfan of the band for years, Dominique Pendleton said she only moved to Townsville six months ago and is ‘blown away’ by the live music acts that have come to the city, having attended one of P!nk’s stadium concerts in March.
A long-time fan of the band since they burst onto the scene twenty years ago, Ms Pendleton said she was keen for the show.
“I mean, everyone’s a fan of Mr Brightside, one of my absolute favourites. We sang it at our wedding, and I cannot wait to see it live,” she said.
“I remember getting their first album, their CD and I still have that.”
Ms Pendleton said live music is Townsville is a different experience compared to the capital cities.
“It feels like being part of a close community and the artists really appreciate the local audience,” she said.
Another local fan of the band Greg Stockham said he never thought he would be able to see The Killers at all, let alone in Townsville.
“For them to be starting their tour here, it’s just amazing,” he said.
Director of visitor economy and marketing at Townsville Enterprise, Lisa Woolfe, said it was a great opportunity for thousands of fans and the local community to experience ‘incredible entertainment’, which is also set to benefit the local economy.
“The absolute bright side of this event is the economic benefit,” she said.
“We will see over $10 million injected into our local community and, of course, it’s an opportunity to showcase Townsville as the major events capital that we are.”
Citing recent events such as the Northern Australian Festival of Arts and the Multisports World Championships being held in Townsville, Ms Woolfe said The Killers show is the perfect end to a great year.
“We have had a really positive response to the announcement of The Killers coming and we are starting to see the travellers book their tickets as well,” she said.
“We’re seeing 30 per cent of the tickets sold going to travellers right across the country. Being one of only four destinations in Australia to be hosting this show that absolutely opens up our audience right across North Australia and North Queensland.”
Tickets for the show, which will be held on Saturday, November 30, at Queensland Country Bank Stadium, are still available on the Frontier Touring website.
