A live production that promised an “ice skating spectacular” but was performed on plastic has been cancelled indefinitely after crowds in Townsville and Mackay labelled it “horrendous”.

The Pace Live event was expected to include “showstopping sets, bedazzling costumes and world-class skaters”.

Families were confronted with poor visibility and atrocious sound quality during the show.

But one woman who attended the Townsville event said views were blocked, the words being lip-synched were distorted, and the characters confusing.

Louise Healey, who took her granddaughter to the Townsville show on September 24, said she initially forgave the show when it started late because of a crash on the highway.

“But when we got there, we were expecting this extravaganza and a really good night out for the kids and it was far, far from that,” she said.

“It was dark the whole time. They had these two large curtains obstructing the side of the stage for no real reason. The show was incredibly loud. You couldn’t hear the words they were singing but they were lip-synching anyway.

“It was advertised as a fairytale on ice, but there was no ice. It was this sort of thick, plastic sheeting.”

Ms Healey said her grandchildren did not understand the show or its characters.

“They know their fairytales, but they were just looking at each other going ‘what is this?’ You couldn’t hear them. You couldn’t see very well because of the curtain. They were getting up because they couldn’t see and we were being told to sit back down.”

Ms Healey said most of the Townsville crowd left before the show ended.

One family were able to secure refunds by sending images of their view of the show.

Eventually, after being denied a refund following the show, she took to social media, and was quickly inundated.

Tickets varied in price but Ms Healey paid about $50 each.

“The messages just kept coming and everybody was saying the exact same thing.”

One commenter said: “What the hell did we witness?”.

Another said their seats had been double-booked with another family, and they were moved to the front of the stage.

“I’m not sure that was an improvement, to be honest,” they said.

Ms Healey said she had not been successful in getting a refund.

The event’s website is still live but “no upcoming events” are listed.

The show promoter, Pace Live, hired the Townsville Entertainment Convention Centre for the event.

Pace Live were contacted for comment.
