EMMA figures show Daily and Sunday Tele audiences surging ahead

The Daily and Sunday Telegraphs have defied bleak media industry trends with significant print and digital audience growth across weekday, Saturday and Sunday editions, according to new figures.

Ben English and Anna Caldwell: A true budget for every Australian

The results are in — and NSW loves The Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

According to the latest audience survey results from Enhanced Media Metrics Australia, or emma, readership of the newspaper’s print and digital editions continues to go from strength to strength in a year where the community has never been more hungry for news.

The Daily and Sunday Telegraphs have grown print audience across every day of the week over the last three months, including +7.5% on weekdays, +11.4% on Saturday and +6.5% on Sunday.

The Sunday Telegraph is Australia’s most read Sunday paper with 672,000 readers — more than double the audience of the Sun-Herald every Sunday.

Daily Telegraph Ben English put the stellar results down to the paper’s commitment to high quality journalism at a time when news has never been more important.

“I want to thank our readers for rewarding our team’s hard work and dedication during such an extraordinary time for journalism,” Mr English said.

“These results are a testament to the dedication and relentless energy of our reporters and photographers to deliver the news, views and insights readers crave.

“It’s been an enormous year for news and The Daily Telegraph has, as ever, risen to the occasion with our comprehensive coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on NSW residents.’’

Sunday Telegraph editor Mick Carroll said it was clear Sydney wanted its news from a trusted source due to the importance of being informed in 2020. “The strong readership numbers during the pandemic show readers turned to trusted newsrooms for information when they needed to most,” he said.

Beyond breaking news, the emma survey found readers were taking deep dives into the paper for news on everything from finance to lifestyle.

Mr English said readers were devouring all corners of the newspaper.

Readership of the Business Daily financial section had soared 17 per cent in the past three months and 5.7 per cent year-on-year, reflecting a growing appetite for quality investment and personal finance coverage, he said.
