A woman who died on a popular Brisbane bikeway might have been trying to get a dropped water bottle when she fell and was fatally injured, police have revealed, as tributes have been left at the scene.
The woman, aged in her 50s, was found by a member of the public on Kedron Brook Bikeway about 5.40am Monday.
The woman was declared dead at the scene.
“Initial investigations suggest that the woman may have been attempting to retrieve a dropped water bottle when she fell and sustained a fatal injury,” a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
It’s unclear how far she fell or how she was injured.
The woman’s death is being treated as non-suspicious and the police spokeswoman said officers would prepare a report for the coroner.
A makeshift memorial was set up along the railing at Kedron Brook.
Red and orange flowers lined the barrier Tuesday night, along with eight coloured balloons.
The words “love you Nan Kerri” were written on one of the balloons, while “love you” and “fly high momma K” were written directly on the railing.
The bikeway was closed while police investigated the incident.
After the woman’s death temporary orange fencing could be seen on both sides of the bikeway.
Brisbane City Council was asked questions on whether the fencing had been broken and or removed, how long the proper fencing had been down and if council would hold an investigation over the incident and whether the fencing/barriers were unsafe.
A Brisbane City Council spokesman said there was a Queensland Police investigation underway and it would not be appropriate to comment.
The temporary orange fencing had been removed by Tuesday night and the railing on both sides blocked direct access to the brook.
