‘White substance’ spill shuts down central Qld road

Hazmat crews and scientific experts are responding after 40kg of a “white granular substance” was spilled along a section of the Neville Hewitt Bridge in Rockhampton.
A spokeswoman from the Queensland Fire Department said crews were called to the bridge around 12.30pm after the substance was noticed.
She said fire crews were working to sweep the substance from the roadway into a salvage drum.
QFD’s state scientific unit would be assisting in identifying the substance and staff from the Department of Environment had also been tasked to help.
The incident is affecting traffic in the area.
