Tradie electrocuted while working on airconditioner at Everton Park home

A neighbour has recalled the “very traumatic” moment a tradie died while working in the roof of an Everton Park home, leaving residents of a quiet suburban street reeling.

Tradie tragedy: why construction workers need safer worksites

The “very traumatic” death of a tradie who was electrocuted while working at an Everton Park home has left the homeowners and entire suburban street in shock.

The 25-year-old man was electrocuted in the roof of a Colbert St home where he was repairing an airconditioner on Wednesday.

A woman who lives next door told The Courier-Mail the tradesman had entered the ceiling through a manhole in the bathroom, with the homeowners becoming concerned when they could not hear him working.

“After he had been up there for a while they told me they couldn’t hear any noise, so they called to him at the bottom of the manhole, saying ‘are you okay?’,” the woman, who requested to remain anonymous, said.

“No response.”

The woman said the homeowner climbed into the ceiling but “all he could see was his feet”.

“He said to his partner, ‘we better call triple-0’.”

The neighbour arrived home from work at 4.30pm to her normally quiet suburb street packed with police cars, ambulances and fire rescue crews.

“They had the cherry picker up and they lifted a lot of tiles off the roof but they still couldn’t get to him that way,” she said.

“So they cut a big hole in the ceiling to bring him down inside the house.”

The man’s body was not retrieved from the home until 7pm.

“It was a big operation and it was very traumatic,” she said.

“The last thing you think will happen when you hire a tradie is that they die in your house.”

The Everton Park resident said her neighbours, who’d she lived next door to for the past four years, had spent the night on the Gold Coast with family.

“They told me ‘we can’t stay inside this house’,” she said. “I think I would have to move if that happened to me.

“I think the shock would really be setting in for them today.

“It was not a good outcome.

“It’s so very sad for everyone concerned.”

The woman said that those living in Colbert Street “looked out for each other”.

“When it’s close by, it affects everyone,” she said.

“Everyone on the street is very close, we are all involved in everyone’s lives.”

She said the tradesman wasn’t married, but had a partner.

“I hope he doesn’t have any kids.”
