Two dogs believed responsible for a vicious attack that left a toddler and a woman in her 60s with significant injuries have been seized by authorities.

The attack happened about 7.10pm on Thursday at Algester in Brisbane’s south.

Paramedics located a young girl at the scene and took her to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a serious condition. She was suffering injuries to her face, neck and chest.

A woman in her 60s was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious condition with significant head injuries and chest pain.

A man in his 60s fell 1.5m from a retaining wall during the incident and was also taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital suffering back pain. He was not attacked by the dogs.

Ambulance crews reported the dogs to be bull mastiffs.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Adrian Tong said crews were able to access “quite a confronting scene” when they arrived at the home because the family had managed to lock the dogs up after the “intense” attack.

“When they got on scene they found a three-year-old girl; she had been bitten by the dogs, along with a 65-year-old female patient,” he said.

The little girl had bite wounds on her face, neck and abdomen, while the woman sustained bite marks to her neck and the back of her head.

“There were a lot of bite marks, it wasn’t just one or two,” Mr Tong said.

“The injuries and the puncture wounds sustained… were quite significant,” Mr Tong said.

“It must have been horrifying for the people involved and looking on.”

A third patient – a man in his 60s – sustained back injuries when he fell 1.5m from a fence he was attempting to climb in an effort to provide assistance.

While the circumstances surrounding what prompted the dogs to attack are not clear, Mr Tong said that “it was about that time of the night when the dogs were about to be fed”.

Mr Tong couldn’t confirm the relationship between the woman and the toddler, but said that they were definitely related and lived at the same property.

Neighbours told The Courier-Mail that the two dogs also lived at the property.

One said she had seen the family walking two “very big” dogs.

“They are huge dogs, they probably come up to about my waist or so,” she said.

“I think they were mastiffs.

“They’re a lovely family and I’ve never heard of any issues with the dogs before so I’m really at a loss to say how this has happened.”

A Brisbane City Council spokesperson confirmed that two dogs had been seized.

“Council attended an address in Algester on Thursday evening and seized two dogs from a private property,” they said.

“Animal attacks are taken incredibly seriously and these animals are at Council’s animal centre while investigations into this incident continue.”
