87km of gridlock hell: M1, Bruce Highway jammed in long weekend exodus

Motorists are facing a traffic nightmare heading out of Brisbane, with congestion almost the entire length of the M1 to the Gold Coast, and on the Gateway and on the Bruce Highway heading north.

Major routes out of Brisbane this afternoon are locked in up to 87km of gridlock hell as motorists hit the road ahead of a long weekend.

Traffic is congested from Brisbane to the Gold Coast as motorists escape the city for the long weekend.

The Pacific Motorway southbound towards the Gold Coast continues to be heavily congested, with traffic crawling from Springwood to Nerang, with reports the trip was taking well over an hour.

Closer to Brisbane the Riverside Expressway and the M3 were also slow.

Traffic is heavy outbound on the Western Freeway from Toowong to Kenmore.

The heaviest of the congestion appeared to be around the Logan Motorway merge at Loganholme and again at Ormeau.

Elsewhere, the Bruce Highway was also heavily congested from beyond the Pine Rivers Bridge to Caboolture and again from Landsborough to the Caloundra turn-off.
