A man killed in a tragic boat crash at Somerset Dam has been remembered as one of a kind, as his family reveal he celebrated his birthday a day before his death.
Philip Nattrass, who turned 45 years old on Saturday, died on Sunday morning when his speed boat flipped just before 9am.
It’s understood Mr Nattrass’ vessel flipped and sank in the dam - north-west of Brisbane - sparking a large-scale search for the Gold Coast man.
Police divers recovered his body around 4pm.
Father, Ian Cranson, said Mr Nattrass died doing one of the things he loved most - driving a “Bullet 1650”.
“Early reports say he wasn’t going that fast, maybe 60k(m/h) but somehow the vessel flipped and then sank rapidly and before his friends and jet skiers could reach him,” Mr Cranson wrote on social media.
“He was 45 years old on Saturday 13th July and Chrissy, Becky, Nina (his girlfriend and soulmate for two years), as well as many friends will miss him dearly.”
Friend Matty McCubben also shared his shock at the loss of his mate.
“You were one of a kind. I’m glad we had some crazy memories and some good times… you certainly had a need for speed… I can only imagine what havoc you are already planning up there,” he said.
The dam was hosting round three of the Queensland Personal Watercraft Club jetski racing on Sunday, but it’s understood Mr Nattrass was not involved with the club.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have relevant vision or may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
