The whole top floor of a two-storey home has been destroyed in a fierce fire at Eight Mile Plains.

Emergency services rushed to reports of a house fire around 4.30pm on Saturday on Catalpa St.

Upon arrival the whole top floor was well involved.

Nobody was injured during the fire.

Neighbour Kerry Sankey instantly rushed over the house to alert the residents of the smoke.

“By the time I saw the black smoke it was well alight,” he said.

“I just rushed over and bashed on the doors as hard as I could to get everyone out.”

Mr Sankey said he grabbed a hose and started spraying the house in an attempt to calm the fire.

“It didn’t do much but it all happened so fast,” he said.

The fire was under control by 5.45pm and out just before 6pm.

Mr Sankey said it was “absolutely devastating.”

“We’ve been neighbours for years,” he said.

“I saw the smoke but as soon as the window upstairs broke I knew it was over.”

Mr Sankey said he was just glad everyone was okay.

“It all happened so fast I knew as soon as I saw smoke coming from the eves,” he said.

Neighbours gathered outside the home to look at the damage on their street.

Neighbour Gang Wei said the fire erupted quickly.

“We just heard fire engines making a big noise,” he said.

“The whole top floor was fully on fire and then there was a roof collapse.”

Mr Wei said he had never seen anything like this before.

“Especially on our street, we’ve only ever seen this on TV,” he said.

Mr Wei said he was shocked.

“We just wanted to make sure nobody was hurt,” he said.

“I initially thought it could have been caused by all this heat.”

It was the second major house fire in Brisbane this weekend, with a home at Coorparoo going up in flames on Friday night.
