The New England Highway south of Warwick remained closed on Sunday evening amid lingering visibility issues after grassfires were brought under control.

About a dozen fire crews had battled blazes on both sides of the highway that broke out about 2pm near The Glen.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said crews were able to bring the fire on the eastern side of the highway under control.

“The fire on the eastern side was under control at 4.40pm and we didn’t have any uncontained fire at that point,” the spokeswoman said.

An earlier “watch and act” warning issued to nearby residents was downgraded to “stay informed” just before 5pm.

Fire crews would patrol the area overnight.
