Police say the officers who fatally shot a man after a “confrontation” in Ipswich on Sunday used their weapons as a “last resort” and tried to save the man’s life immediately after the shots were fired.
It comes as footage has shown the man pointing a gun at police during the tense standoff.
Acting Assistant Commissioner David Cuskelly said officers had engaged with the man, 27, outside an Ernest St, One Mile address for nearly an hour.
Commissioner Cuskelly alleged the man pulled a firearm on officers which resulted in the man being shot.
He did not say how many shots were fired or where any bullets struck the man as it was under investigation.

It will be alleged the man “threatened” police on arrival.
“Upon arrival, police engaged with a man and a woman, during the negotiation the woman was rendered safe and pulled away from the confrontation,” Cuskelly said,
“Our police are well trained, particularly around the use of force. Split second decisions that can have the ultimate consequence, they take it very seriously and are well trained.”
Police union president Ian Leavers said the officer’s lives were at risk.
“It’s very fortunate that we don’t have a murdered police officer,” Mr Leavers said.
He said the male officers were under the command of a seasoned district duty officer who did everything in their power to seek a peaceful resolution.
“Police try and use the least amount of force, they were doing all they could but had no other option,” he said.
“Police use firearms as a last resort.”
A witness told The Courier-Mail that police had been negotiating with a man armed with a “weapon” who “lunged” at the officers.
“From what we could see, he lunged at them, police fired and then the paramedics came up,” the witness said.
“This is definitely a first. We’ve just been told to stay inside.”
A number of locals have reported on social media of hearing gunshots in the area and seeing police running on foot through the nearby park.
A crime scene has been established in Ernst St and people are urged to avoid the area.
An emergency declaration was issued about noon for a number of streets in One Mile.
An exclusion zone was established from Old Toowoomba Road to Siemona St, Oakhill St and Ernest St.
The declaration was revoked about 2.05pm, but public access to the area remains restricted.
Ethical Standards Command are investigating the incident on behalf of the State Coroner. The investigation is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
