A man in his 70s has been killed in a horror crash at Bauple on Thursday night.
The crash happened about 8.40pm on the Bruce Highway when a vehicle and a truck, which were travelling in opposite directions, collided.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.
The driver of the truck, a 28-year-old Ipswich man, was not physically injured.
The Bruce Highway was closed in both directions at Bauple for several hours overnight, and reopened at about 3am on Friday.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact police.
The crash is latest in a series which has sparked a campaign by News sites from Gympie, Bundaberg and Fraser Coast calling on the government to upgrade ‘goat track’ roads.
The region’s readers say 47 roads need work to make their daily commutes safer and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has confirmed works are recently completed, under way or planned for 31 sections of road.
He said more than $1.5 billion had been committed to infrastructure projects in the Wide Bay Burnett over four years to 2026.
“We are delivering upgrades to more than a third of the Bruce Highway between Gympie and Gin Gin,” he said.
The Road Rage campaign was sparked by the deaths of 37 people in 2022 on Wide Bay and Burnett region roads.
