An elderly cyclist has suffered significant injuries after falling from his bike and becoming trapped in a stormwater drain for more than 40 minutes on the Gold Coast on Wednesday morning.
The 79-year-old man was riding on Peachey Rd, Ormeau, when he fell into the drain about 6.10am.
He became entangled with the bike in the drain and suffered significant lower leg and chest injuries.
Emergency services worked to free the man who was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
Queensland Ambulance Service critical care paramedic Jaye Newton said the man was found ‘tangled up in his mountain bike’ in a culvert.
“He looked like he’d missed the bridge and gone down on his mountain bike,” Mr Newton said.
“He was tangled up in his mountain bike down in the drain down in the water.
“Unfortunately this gentleman had been there for quite some time so he was very cold. He was partially in the water and his clothes were all saturated.
“It looks like he sustained some leg injuries and maybe some chest injuries as well.
“We required the help of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to come and help us extricate him from the culvert.
“The mountain bike was still tangled around his hip and his leg.”
