A man has tragically died after his car hit a tree on a rural road in the Southern Downs.
Police and paramedics were called out to Sugarloaf Rd, about 10km east of Stanthorpe, at 6am on Saturday of reports a ute had hit a tree.
The driver, a 25-year-old Sugarloaf man, was declared dead at the scene, police said.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
It comes after recent road fatality data revealed Queensland was on track to have one of its most deadly years on record, as the road toll edges toward 300.
A second fatality in the Darling Downs region on Sunday night has increased the region’s annual number of road fatalities to 31.
With large numbers of drivers expected to hit the road over the Christmas period, Senior Sergeant Kim Hill from the Toowoomba Highway Patrol is calling on everyone to do their part to stem the loss of lives.
“We need to be courteous to each other, obey the road rules, ensure that we are not speeding, that we have our seatbelts on, that we are not driving impaired or distracted,” she said.
Queensland Police began their annual Christmas road safety blitz on December 13, which will continue until January 27 to ensure motorists are doing the right thing.
