Man dies in morning swim off Stradbroke Island campground

Lifesavers tried desperately to save a man who was pulled from the water near a popular camping spot on Stradbroke Island after an early morning swim ended in tragedy.

A morning swim has ended in tragedy after a man drowned in the water off a popular Stradbroke Island campground.

The man, 60, had gone for a swim in rough surf off Main Beach on the east side of North Stradbroke Island on Sunday morning when he was reportedly swept out to sea in the waves.

Five Point Lookout Surf Life Saving Club volunteer members and one lifeguard rushed to the swimming spot, which is about 15km south of Point Lookout, after they were alerted to the man in trouble about 7.35am.

A Surf Life Saving Queensland spokeswoman said an ATV, jet ski and helicopter tasked to search for the man who was pulled from water in a critical condition about 8am.

Lifesavers spent about 20 minutes giving him CPR while they waited for an ambulance to reach the beach off Alfred Martin Way.

Paramedics were called to the area near the campground about 7.30am but a police spokesman confirmed the man was unable to be revived.

It’s not known yet if the man was local to the area or staying on the island.

Surf Life Saving Queensland conducted 30 rescues across the state over the weekend, including a massive 21 rescues at Sunshine Coast beaches.

A further 94 incidents requiring minor first aid were reported and lifeguards enacted more than 4600 preventative measures to stop further rescues from happening.

A Hazardous surf warning is in place for the Fraser Island coast, Sunshine Coast waters and Gold Coast waters today, with the Bureau of Meteorology advising people to take caution while rock fishing, boating, swimming and surfing.

Surf Life Saving Queensland has offered support to the lifesavers involved in the incident.
