A man has lost his life and a woman is dead in what was a horror afternoon on Queensland roads, with separate crashes at Stanthorpe and on the Sunshine Coast.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said a woman, believed to be aged in her 40s, died after passing motorists witnessed a car on fire on the Maleny-Kenilworth road at Conondale, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, about 6.30pm.

Emergency crews arrived and attempted to perform CPR before she died from her critical injuries.

It is understood that the car crashed into a tree before catching alight.

Elsewhere, the man has died and police are appealing for information after a horror crash at Stanthorpe on Monday afternoon.

Investigators say the crash happened about 4pm between a car turning on to the New England Highway and a four-wheel-drive travelling south on the highway.

Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the 60-year-old Stanthorpe man driving the car died at the scene, while his 57-year-old male passenger was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The 83-year-old Lawrence man driving the 4WD was treated for minor injuries, as was his 59-year-old passenger.

Investigators from the Forensic Crash Unit are examining the crash and ask that anyone with information come forward.
