A 61-year old Darling Downs woman has died after a two-car crash on the Warrego Highway near Gatton on Friday afternoon.

Police say the two cars – a Toyota Rav 4 and a Honda CRV – were travelling in opposite directions when they collided about 1.15.

The woman, from Kleinton, who was in a rear passenger seat in the Honda, was in a critical condition when paramedics arrived but could not be saved.

The 21-year-old driver and 68-year-old male front passenger were taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital for treatment.

Two young girls, aged 10 and 12, were in the back seat of the Rav 4.

The 10 year-old girl was airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital with life-threatening pelvic and chest injuries, and is reportedly in a stable condition.

The 12-year-old girl and the driver of the car, a 68-year-old Wilston man, were taken to the Toowoomba Base Hospital.

A Darling Downs Health spokesperson on Friday night said all four patients at the Toowoomba Base Hospital were currently stable.

The front seat passenger of the Rav 4, a 73-year-old woman was airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she received treatment for critical back and leg injuries. She was in a stable condition last night.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
