Gold Coast woman dies after falling 20m off waterfall retrieving tripod for friend
A young woman who plunged 20m to her death at a Gold Coast hinterland waterfall has been identified as medicine graduate Ujvala Vemuru.

A young woman, who fell to her death while trying to retrieve photographic equipment at a Gold Coast hinterland waterfall has been identified as medicine graduate Ujvala Vemuru.
Ms Vemuru graduated from Gold Coast’s Bond University at the end of 2023 with a Bachelor of Medical Studies and Doctor of Medicine.
It is understood Ms Vemuru had been hiking with friends at Yanbacoochie Falls in Lamington National Park in the Gold Coast Hinterland when they stopped to take photos using a tripod.
Ms Vemuru is believed fell 20m from the falls trying to retrieve the tripod when the tragedy occurred.
Three off-duty doctors who were in the area at the time worked tirelessly to revive Ms Vemuru, but sadly, she could not be saved.
Paramedics and firefighters were reportedly attending the area early this week to retrieve the body.
It is understood Ms Vemuru’s family live in Western Australia, where she graduated from Willetton Senior High School in 2018.
She was previously honoured as one of “WA’s brightest young minds’, according to a Perth Now article from 2018.
In her younger years, Ms Vemuru attended a dance school in Western Australia.
Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
