A South East Queensland toddler who was hit by a truck as she was being pushed across a pedestrian crossing in a stroller has been identified.
Little Evelyn, 3, was taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital in a critical condition with serious head injuries after being hit by the truck on Browns Plains Rd and Webber Dr at 8.40am on Thursday.
It’s understood the woman pushing the stroller was crossing at the pedestrian cross walk at the lights at the time of the incident. She was not physically injured.
The driver of the truck, a man in his 40s, is assisting police with their inquiries.
Evelyn’s great grandmother shared an emotional message to social media saying she was in an induced coma, and praising the efforts of those who were first to the scene of the incident.
“Our great granddaughter … she is in an induced coma,” she wrote.
“Thank you to QPS and ambulance service and all who stopped to help.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family by a friend to “help with the financial assistance of the family.”
“They also have an 8 year old boy at home and also any help that may be needed throughout Evelyn‘s journey,” the post said.
“She is currently undergoing surgery for her injuries. Any little donation will help the family at this time.”
Tow truck driver Andrew Davis was the first to arrive at the scene, rushing to the aid of the visibly distraught woman.
“As I came up to the lights, I saw the mother picking up the baby and I just pulled up and put my lights on and jumped and ran out of the truck to help,” Mr Davis said.
“She was very upset, obviously screaming her head off.
“The baby, when I got out of the truck, she had her on the ground here.
“And another lady pulled up and was a nurse in training, and I rang the ambulance and they were telling us what to do.
“I was relaying that to the girl working on the baby, and it wasn’t nice.”
Acting senior sergeant Phil Hughes said the truck was travelling eastbound in the left lane of Browns Plains Rd when the mother pushing the pram crossed the road towards Webber Rd.
“The truck has struck the pram causing some critical injuries to the child,” Act Sen Sgt Hughes said.
“We are appealing for dashcam or CCTV footage of the incident and any witnesses to come forward.”
Police have blocked one lane at the busy intersection on Browns Plains Rd.
“It’s always a busy road at this time of day or throughout the day,” he said.
“Unfortunately there is no city safe cameras at this intersection.”
Lorraine Eggers, whose business is located close to the crossing, said she did not witness the incident but saw the toddler at the crossing being treated by paramedics.
“I saw the wheel off the pram … I was driving to work when I saw them working on the baby,” Ms Eggers said.
Ms Eggers said the crossing at Browns Plains Rd is “pretty dangerous” and had witnessed previous crashes at the same intersection.
“We hear crashes here all the time, screeches and bangs, a year ago a car got T-boned in the same spot,” Ms Eggers said.
“The road is problematic, and that little crossing there is hard to see.
“It’s very busy and there’s so many entrances coming into it.”
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them.
