A car has been stolen from the scene of an accident involving a young boy on a scooter on the Gold Coast.

The bizarre incident happened about 3.15pm at the corner of Central St and Usher Avenues at Labrador.

Police sources say the boy, aged about 11, was riding his scooter behind his mother when he was hit by a white 2005 Hyundai Accent driven by a male motorist and thrown over the bonnet.

He was not seriously hurt but was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Mitch Ware said the boy was on his way home from school and was trying to cross the road when he was hit by the Hyundai.

He said the driver stopped to help the boy, only to have his car stolen.

“It was certainly an opportunistic crime, it would seem,” Mr Ware said.

“The vehicle wasn’t damaged but the driver was obviously shaken. It was quite a chaotic scene, as you can imagine, upon our arrival.”

Mr Ware said it was unclear how the car was stolen.

He said the boy was transported to hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Ware said it was a busy area with a number of schools in the area, and urged motorists to slow down and watch for schoolchildren darting out into traffic.

The boy was taken by ambulance to Gold Coast University Hospital and police are investigating the theft.
