A paediatric surgeon has been announced as the Burdekin candidate for Katter’s Australian Party.

After moving to Townsville from the UK 13 years ago Dr Daniel Carroll was announced on Wednesday by KAP leader Robbie Katter.

Dr Carroll believes he has served the community well in his role and said he now wants to give back, citing health accessibility and cost of living as issues he wants to tackle.

“I feel that it’s the time for me to try and give back to the community which I live and work in,” he said.

Dr Carroll said in his daily job he hears a lot of feedback from patients families about issues that are concerning them.

“Speaking from personal experience of living up here, I think the things that worry people most in their day-to-day life would be cost of living. Cost of insurance is terrible and that hits businesses.”

On his decision to stand as a Katter’s Australian Party candidate Dr Carroll said he wants to ‘stand up’ for people in North Queensland.

“The KAP stands for values instead of political ideology,” he said.

“If you are one of the two major players, Liberal or Labor, you’ve got to do what your party wants and that isn’t necessarily what your electorate needs.”

Hoping to build the health future of North Queensland, Dr Carroll shared his ‘one wish’ that would be a big focus of his campaign.

“There is a lack of fairness for people living regionally,” he said.

“If I had one wish, and this was the wish that I had when I first came here, would be that North Queensland would have a children’s hospital. I think the people of North Queensland would benefit from that. It would make sure patients can get treatment closer to home.”

When asked why Burdekin residents should give him their vote, Dr Carroll said people in the regions needed to know their vote was important and their voices were being heard.

“A vote for me is a vote for the people of Burdekin,” he said.
