Darwin City parking fine figure revealed

The City of Darwin has revealed the total amount in car park fines issued in FY23. Read more for the final figure.

Parking fine revenue in 2023 has decreased year-on-year, but Darwinites are still forking out a total of more than a million dollars for illegally parking.

A spokesperson confirmed the latest whopping amount paid.

“The total income from parking fines in FY23 was $1,214,000 compared to $1,386,000 in FY22,” the spokesperson said.

“Income from these fines goes into an Off and On Street parking reserve which contributes to parking operations and parking infrastructure.”

The figure was up from $1.182m in 2021.

The spokesperson confirmed officers were guided by existing bylaws.

“City of Darwin officers are guided by the by-laws 2023 regarding control of parking, off-street parking areas and on-street parking,” they said.

“City of Darwin is committed to improving the efficiency, sustainability, and overall management of parking in the CBD.”

The City of Darwin confirmed it intended to make movement within the city easier.

“In FY23 we released the city’s first ever Movement Strategy, which aims to make it easier for people to move around our city by improving streetscapes, infrastructure and connectivity,” the spokesperson told NT News.

“As part of this strategy, we adopted a revised carparking policy which assessed on and off-street parking facilities and management systems.”

It comes after fees for parking in the city on Saturday was introduced in August — the revenue those have brought in will be seen in the next annual report.

An increase to fees in Zone A parking zones, mainly those out the front of CBD businesses, was also floated in the City of Darwin’s draft 2023-24 municipal plan.
