Cyclone Fina recovery: Palmerston launches major clean-up effort
Palmerston City Council has launched post-Cyclone Fina recovery operations with clean-up efforts expected to continue for weeks as residents queue with dozens of vehicles to clear storm debris.
Palmerston City Council has launched its post-Cyclone Fina recovery, with efforts expected to continue for weeks or even months.
Teams have been on the ground since Sunday, assisting residents and co-ordinating clean-up operations.
On Monday afternoon, dozens of utes, vans, trailers, and trucks queued at the Archer Waste Management Facility as locals worked to remove fallen branches, hedges, and toppled trees scattered across streets.
While Palmerston avoided the worst of the storm compared to Darwin, the aftermath still left gums, palms, and other greenery littering the township.
The facility, open exclusively to Palmerston residents, accepted general, recycling, and green waste.
Staff enforced a strict residents-only policy after attempts from nearby areas to offload waste for free.
Residents are reminded to provide proof of residency and not to leave waste on verges. Kerbside bin collections have resumed in Zuccoli, Marlow Lagoon, Rosebery, and Bellamack, with missed pickups either able to be taken to Archer or held until the next scheduled service.
Council facilities, including the library, SWELL, and Palmerston Recreation Centre, have reopened, and community bookings have resumed.
The council is urging residents to drive cautiously and follow guidance from NTG and emergency services.
Updates are available through the Palmerston City Council’s website, Facebook page, the City of Palmerston app or call 08 8935 9922. For emergencies dial 000.
