A Gold Coast man who flew off the handle when his partner was unable to pick him up from the airport launched a violent, prolonged attack on her, a court has heard.

Leichhardt man Curt Alan Griese, 34, appeared via videolink in Southport District Court on Monday, July 14, where he faced six charges.

He pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one each of strangulation, common assault, wilful damage, and contravening a police protection notice.

All offences were committed in the early hours of October 2, 2023 at Coolangatta.

His victim was a woman he had been in a relationship with for three to four months.

On the afternoon of October 1, Griese’s partner was having drinks with friends and told the defendant she couldn’t pick him up from the airport, but instead sent him money for a taxi.

In response, the court heard, Griese sent through a blizzard of abusive messages.

When she got home, Griese was smoking a cigarette out the front, and he abused her further when he noticed the woman’s driver was male, calling her a sl-t.

Once inside the residence, Griese headbutted the woman and then pushed her to the ground, before departing for 5-10 minutes, the court heard.

When he returned, the woman had changed into her pyjamas, and Griese complained she “dressed up for everyone but him”.

In the bedroom, he overturned the mattress, pinning her painfully against a wall, before demanding to see her phone, the court heard.

He then threw her onto the bed frame and forced his fist into her jaw, leaving it there for several seconds and causing the woman to fear her jaw would become dislocated, before he strangled her for several seconds when she began screaming for help.

Police arrived and the woman went to Tweed Valley Hospital, where she was treated with painkillers, and Griese was served with a police protection notice.

However, when the woman arrived back home, Griese was on her couch in breach of the order, and he subsequently chased her around her vehicle, which he had disabled.

He also smashed a car window before fleeing.

Griese was arrested and charged later that day.

He was bailed in March 2024 before being arrested and remanded in custody on new matters in February this year, the court heard.

The court was told Griese, from South Australia originally, had a poor criminal history in that jurisdiction, featuring multiple convictions for offences of violence.

Griese was a long-term methamphetamine addict who had a prejudicial upbringing and was working at a boat yard at the time of the offending, the court was told.

He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment with court-ordered parole after serving 12 months, which will fall on December 1 this year, taking into account time served.
