Cops spike wrong car trying to stop Volvo stolen from suburban Alice Springs home
A Red Centre resident has been reimbursed by police after their car was accidentally spiked by cops – who were trying to stop a group who’d allegedly stolen a Volvo in Alice Springs.
Cops have spiked the wrong car trying to stop a group of teens allegedly joy-riding in a stolen Volvo in Alice Springs.
A 14-year-old boy faced court in Alice Springs on Monday for his alleged involvement in theft, which police said occurred Sunday.
Police will allege the teen was one of four young males involved in the theft of a Volvo car from a home in Eastside between about 2pm and 4pm on Saturday afternoon.
Alice Springs watch commander Carl Marcic said police observed the vehicle driving down Bradshaw Drive, before heading south along Stuart Highway.
A police vehicle returning to Alice Springs was able to lay tyre deflating devices which shredded three of the Volvo’s four tyres.
But while trying to stop the allegedly stolen Volvo, cops shredded the tyres of a civilian car, NT police in a statement released late Monday afternoon.
NT Police reimbursed the owner of the civilian car for the tyre damage, according to the statement.
The allegedly stolen Volvo was finally stopped about 40km south of Alice Springs after the fourth tyre was deflated, with police detaining a 14-year-old, an 11-year-old and two 10-year-olds from the vehicle.
The three younger youths were released into the custody of a parent to be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act, and the 14-year-old was arrested and charged with car theft offences.
