Raise your glass to the region’s newest cocktail bar venue with a twist, that is set to revolutionise Toowoomba’s entertainment sector.

Teela Strang, 35, has always been passionate about the creative industries, but after 10 years of running her own face painting business she made the bold decision to change direction after the impacts of Covid-19.

And now Ms Strang is bringing new life to the region’s night-life with her new venture Lok and Kee.

“It will essentially be Toowoomba’s first theatrical cocktail lounge,” she said.

“There is just so much talent here in Toowoomba and our reason for bringing it here is to give these incredible performers a stage and space that hopefully encourages them to stay in the Garden City.”

Offering two shows on Friday and Saturday nights, patrons won’t believe their eyes with cabaret, aerial, contortionist, hula-hoop and fire twirling talent lined up.

Toowoomba drag queen Dylan Ashton recently spoke to The Chronicle about the challenges the community and entertainment sector had faced since Covid-19.

Confirmed as one of the performers set to step onto the stage of Lok and Kee, Mr Ashton said it was an exciting time for Toowoomba.

“I cannot wait to be a part of Lok & Kee and give Toowoomba an all-inclusive venue, for not only the guests but the entertainers too,” he said.

“This is such a great idea and Teela is putting whole heart and soul into her new project.”

Ms Strang said while she respects that Toowoomba had been and to an extent could still be a conservative town, there was a lot to love about the drag queen community.

“Drag is not just drag – there are so many different elements to their art form and I’m so excited to be offering that community a safe space and stage where they can perform on a regular basis,” she said.

“(The drag queen community) are phenomenal people, they are part of our city and what they have to bring to the table, in terms of personality and talent, is so unbelievable – this fun environment will allow people to see just how incredibly gorgeous they are.”

The business owner described the space as being New York speak-easy, meets Gatsby, meets vintage swank.

The intimate space will have a cocktail bar and tapas style menu.

The 18+ venue will be available to book for functions and events. Lok and Kee is set to open early 2022 and more details including the location will be revealed soon.
