Colac lands dual St Kilda best-and-fairest winner Seb Ross as new co-coach

After missing the finals this year, Colac is well placed to go deep in September in 2025 after signing a two-time AFL best and fairest winner.

Colac has secured a massive signing Geelong league off-season, landing dual St Kilda best and fairest winner Seb Ross as its new co-coach.

Ross, 31, played 13 games for the Saints up until round 14 before suffering a calf injury at training and was delisted at the end of the season.

The hard-edged midfielder played 211 games for St Kilda in 13 seasons and won Trevor Barker awards in 2017 — named in the All-Australian squad in the same year — and 2019.

Ross told SEN last month he was still eager to play in the AFL system but Colac will now be the beneficiary of his talents.

“The body is able, and the mind is able, so I’ve got to wait until after the trade period if there’s any list spots available, but I’d certainly be open to continuing on my career,” Ross said in September.

“I think I still have AFL footy left in me and over my career, I was able to grow as a person and a leader and I think that if any club were to take a chance on me, I’d be a real asset for them.”

Former Colac coach Rowan McSparron confirmed in June he would step down at the end of the season — first joining the club in 2019 — with McSparron eager to follow his son Wade’s college football career.

Colac missed the finals by one winin 2024 after consecutive straight sets in the previous two seasons.

The acquisition of Ross will certainly help their cause of not only returning to the finals but going deep into September.

The Tigers should also be helped by a more favourable draw in 2025, playing top-three opponents St Joseph’s, St Mary’s and Leopold twice.

Ross joins Geelong great Steve Johnson — who signed with Newtown & Chillwell last week — in the GFNL coaching ranks.
