It did not all come together in Round 1 but City Lions skipper Brodie Deverell is confident his club can challenge the top two of AFL Cairns in 2020.
The runner-up in last seasons Crathern Medal thinks the maturation of their local juniors and some quality recruits can see Lions build on their fourth-placed finish last campaign.
“As a club we are just trying to improve as much as we can this year,” Deverell said.
“Hopefully that will see us move up this season.
“We have improved skill and fitness-wise that will help us compete with club’s like Port and South Cairns.
“Because we have got these recruits and the guys that have been around the last few years more at training, I think we will be pushing those top teams in 2020.”
> GAME IS ON TO BRING PORT’S REIGN TO HALT
The former Collingwood-listed Peter Yagmoor returned to his junior club, Lions, on Saturday but could not inspire an upset win first-up.
Opposition coach Brad Cooper declared Yagmoor as Lions’ best player on Saturday in the Crocs comfortable victory, to collect the annual Bown Shield, which is played for the first time Lions and Port meet each other in a season.
Deverell will look to build on his outstanding first season in FNQ.
“I was a bit surprised with the personal accolade last year, I did not think that was going to happen,” he said.

Lions travel to Cazalys Stadium to face Manunda, who also went down in Round 1, this Saturday.
